Charlie Chaplin's The Kid
A silent film!! From 1921 this is the first full length comedy. I first watched this at Silent Sunday at the Wilton Town Hall Theater in Wilton, NH. It's really good. I hope you folks like it!
You can find this on Amazon and Hulu (you need hulu plus to view it), it's also available on Netflix, but they will only mail it to you, they will not stream it.

So, we watched the kid! It was fun watching it with everyone crammed in the living room! :)
ReplyDeleteThe story is fairly simple, there's a single mom, who is poor, and attempts to leave her baby to a rich family. She does it by leaving the baby in their car - unfortunately evil car thieves steal the car (and unknowingly the baby) - and when they discover the baby they leave it by some trash cans in a poor section of town. Charlie Chaplin comes along and sees the baby, and thinks a lady with a stroller dropped it, she yells at him, then he tries to put it back by the trash cans, but a policeman sees him, he gives the baby to an old guy, then runs away. The old guy gives it to the lady with the stroller, she sees Charlie Chaplin and gives him the baby back, then beats him with her umbrella. The policeman shows up and he takes the baby home, where he names the baby John.
John and him lead a happy life of cons and occasional street fights, until John gets sick and the doctor discovers he is actually an orphan at which point he calls the orphanage to take the boy. Charlie rescues John, and they are on the run, but soon John is caught again, and he is found by his mother - who missed him a lot, and had actually run into him previously when she was giving apples to kids in the poor section of town - but she didn't know it! Until she saw the note Charlie had given the Doctor and recognized it! Then she found her boy and brought him home - But Charlie is left searching for him, and he falls asleep waiting for the boy to come home - and has a dream of angles and demons and flying dogs (the movie gets weird here for a bit) - and then he is found by the police and brought to the fancy house where John and his mom are now staying - and everyone is happy! :)

The fight between John and the little punk that is mean on their street -
The flying dog.
And this exchange in the living room "Oh, the movie gets weird here.. " Dad: "Weird? How? ... Oh.." (As flowers and horse shoes and angles appear on screen..)
My rating: 4 Street fight punches to the face and 1 flying dog (I liked it a lot)
